When you report a problem, these details help narrow down the cause.
- Your iPhone model and iOS version
- Whether you were on Wi-Fi or a cellular connection
- Which screen you were on, and what you did when it happened
- A screenshot, if you can take one
Frequently asked questions
- What happens if I do not allow Location?
-
The app works. The only difference is that the network name (SSID) of the Wi-Fi you are
connected to is not shown. iOS requires location permission to read the SSID; Denpa does
not use the location itself. It never records or sends your location.
- What happens if I do not allow Local Network?
-
Every measurement still runs. The response time to the first device is measured too.
iOS requires this permission in order to communicate with devices on the same network.
- No upload speed is shown
-
Upload is measured only when the server you have selected supports it.
Cloudflare, the default, does support it. If you switch to Linode (Singapore),
OVHcloud (France), or Vultr (Tokyo) in Settings, only download is measured.
- The speed on Page is lower than the speed measured in Diagnostics
-
They measure different things. The speed on the Page screen is derived from the whole
page load. Page loads are dominated by waiting, so the value comes out lower than the
speed of the connection itself. Measure the speed of the connection on the Diagnostics
screen. Do not compare the two figures or treat them as the same thing.
- How much data does one measurement use?
-
You can choose in Settings. Each direction uses 5 MB on Small (S), 20 MB on Medium
(M, the default), or 30 MB on Large (L), and on a server that supports upload one run
uses twice that in total.
Be mindful of this on a cellular plan.
- Can it show signal strength (what the bars represent)?
-
No. Only apps individually approved by Apple can read it.
- Where are results saved?
-
On your device only. Results, location names, and notes are not sent anywhere.
See the privacy policy for details.
- Are the URLs I open on the Page screen saved?
-
No. The URLs you enter, the pages you view, and their content are not kept.
Nothing goes into History either. The cache is cleared before every load, so no page data
remains on your device. The traffic is the same as a browser’s, so to the site you
connect to it looks like ordinary browsing (including cookies being sent and received).
See the privacy policy for details.
- Can it make my connection faster?
-
No. Denpa is a tool for measuring and narrowing down, not an app that makes your connection
faster. It cannot change your router settings either. Its job is to narrow down the cause.
- Changing the display language
-
You can switch the language for this app alone from Settings in the app.
Tapping it opens the iOS Settings app; the switch does not happen inside Denpa.
How to use, inside the app
How to use, which you open from Settings in the app, covers which screen to use when,
how to read the results, and what to look at when something is not working.
Each screen also has a short explanation you can read on the spot.
